Black Sun in the Marsh and in the Wadden Sea

When millions of starlings gather

Black Sun is a natural phenomenon that occurs twice a year, Spring and autumn.

The starling as a migratory bird

Every year, the starling moves away, the northern hemisphere, south and back, forming the flocks that are well known under the name Black Sun.

The starlings migrate in smaller flocks from a few thousand, up to several hundred thousand. Before the birds settle for the night, they gather in huge flocks that can reach up to 1.5 million birds in one place.

This happens almost at the time of year in the long grass of Tøndermarsken.
