In Tønder you will find the best shopping opportunities, the nicest cafes, historical atmosphere and beautiful nature right up to the town.
Tønder is one of the oldest towns with market town privileges, probably built in the 1000s by the then navigable Vidå. The city has been exposed to a lot of floods and the marsh was dammed in the 15th and 16th centuries. Tønder harbor was closed down and moved to Rudbøl and later to Højer. Tønder became known for the production of fine lace, large beef markets and therefore you will find large houses, built by rich merchants and very small houses, which belonged to craftsmen in Tønder. The regional history is shown at Tønder museum and Drøhse's house and the Zeppelin museum tells about Tønder in World War I. Tønder has had different affiliations between Danish kings and the Duchy of Schleswig. Today, Tønder is a good example of peaceful coexistence between Danish and German. The city is a good starting point to visit Germany, the Wadden Sea and study
The history of the border country. Many nice little shops and restaurants in historic buildings, campsite and hotels provide a cozy stay.
