Bird life, plant life and much more you will find in the huge Tøndermarsk which is the largest of its kind. A trip in the Marsh is without a doubt a nature experience of a special category.
The marsh is the flat, grassy landscape that lies between the higher geest in the east and the ford in the west. It is created by the tide from the Wadden Sea, which has flooded the flat coastal land and deposited sediments of sand and clay, the so-called clump, which over time created a fertile soil type. The strong tides on the shores of the North Sea ensure regular periods of flooding and drying out. Plants and animals must be able to tolerate this and at the same time the supply of salt and fresh water. One of the first plants to settle is evening primroses, sea urchins and various grasses. Animals such as worms and crustaceans metabolize and condense the licks. When the marsh formation has reached a certain thickness of the candy layer, the marsh can be dammed and used as meadow and arable land. One of the large contiguous marsh areas is Tøndermarsken, where a system of canals, streams and ditches ensures a constant supply of water and material and the water level in the area is controlled and controlled with the help of the locks.
