The Rømø dam is a 9.2 km long road dam that connects Rømø with the mainland at Skærbæk in Southern Jutland. Construction began as early as 1938, as an employment project, but due to World War II, the work was not completed until 1948.
Twice a day the tide changes and this can be clearly seen when driving over the dam. If you reach low tide, you can see the seabed up to several kilometers out and also when there is high tide, the water goes up to the slope on the dam.
The dam is always open and can always be driven on, the tide does not run over the road as the road is raised from the seabed.
